What does the local community offer?
Two of the nation’s largest fresh water lakes (Gaston and Buggs Island, or John Kerr, if you prefer) are a mere twenty minutes’ drive from town. These lakes provide myriad opportunities for boating, fishing and water sports. Also to be found around the lakes is a growing retirement community. Our industrial base is growing and agriculture is still a major segment of the local economy. The Chamber of Commerce is very active and South Hill was one of the first towns in the state to be named a Certified Business Community. We are served by VCU Health Community Memorial Center. VCU Health CMH has a new hospital with 70 private patient rooms and a long term care facility with an additional 140 beds. VCU Health CMH provides a wide array of in-patient services, including acute care and long-term care along with many outpatient programs such as home health, hospice and many others.
